SE Slip Type Elevator or Spider

SE Slip Type Elevator or Spider is a specialized tool used in oil and gas drilling operations for handling tubulars—especially casing, tubing, and drill pipe—safely and efficiently.

What is the SE Slip Type Elevator or Spider?
The SE Series Elevator/Spider is a combination tool that serves two purposes:

  1. As a Spider: It acts as a stationary gripping device on the rig floor.
  2. As an Elevator: It can be lifted by the rig’s hoisting system to move pipe vertically.

This dual functionality allows it to run and pull pipe more smoothly, especially on rigs with high automation.

Key Features
Slip-Type Mechanism: Uses tapered slips with hardened steel inserts that grip the pipe body securely.
Interchangeable Inserts: Adaptable to various pipe sizes by changing the inserts or slip segments.

High Load Capacity: Typically rated from 250 tons to 500 tons, making it suitable for heavy casing jobs.

Hydraulic or Pneumatic Operation: SE spiders are often automated, reducing manual handling and increasing safety.

How It Works

  1. The elevator/spider is placed over the well center.
  2. The pipe is lowered into the spider.
  3. The slips are engaged, gripping the pipe.
  4. The elevator/spider supports the pipe while the next joint is added.
  5. When lifting, it acts as an elevator, carrying the pipe up.

Advantages:
Versatility: Acts as both an elevator and spider.
Time-saving: Reduces the need for separate tools during pipe handling.
Safety: Hydraulic/pneumatic options reduce the need for manual setting and lifting.
Consistency: Maintains a strong, even grip on the pipe string during long operations.

Common Applications:
Running casing strings.
Tripping drill pipe in and out of hole.
Handling tubing on completions or workovers.
