I recently came across a video of a roughneck working without a helmet, gloves, or coverall. Zero PPE. Zero safety.
This raises an important question: how can anyone work without safety in such a high-risk environment like a drilling rig?
- hazards are everywhere – falling objects, rotating equipment, high-pressure lines, slips and trips. One small mistake without PPE can cost a life.
- PPE (helmet, gloves, coveralls, safety glasses, boots) is the last line of defense when engineering and procedural barriers fail.
-Safety culture isn’t just about wearing equipment – it’s about mindset. If someone is not following basic safety rules, it often reflects gaps in supervision, training, or accountability.
- The truth is simple: No job is so urgent that it cannot be done safely.
-And no task is successful if it sends someone home injured.
