

In Coiled Tubing (CT) operations, maintaining well control while working under pressure is critical. Two key components make this possible: Stripper and BOP (Blowout Preventer) which called PCE( pressure control equipment)
1. The Stripper (primary barrier)
The Stripper is the primary sealing element during normal operations.
How it works:
• Uses a rubber element to seal around the coiled tubing
• Allows the tubing to move in and out of the well under pressure
Function:
• Prevents fluid or gas leakage
• Maintains pressure control while running/pulling CT
• Works continuously during the job
Stripper = Dynamic sealing while operating (Primary barrier)
2.BOP (Blowout Preventer)
The BOP is the main safety barrier used for full well isolation when needed.
2.1 Common types in CT operations:
• Quad BOP → Typically includes 4 ram functions (Pipe, Slip, Shear, Blind)
• Combi BOP → Combination of multiple functions in fewer rams (Pipe+Slip, Shear+Blind)
2.2 Main components (Rams):
• Pipe Rams → Seal around the tubing
- Slip Rams → Hold the CT string
• Shear Rams → Cut the tubing and seal the well in emergencies
• Blind Rams → Close when no tubing is present
2.3 Function:
• Provides complete well shut-in
• Handles high-pressure situations
• Used during emergencies or critical operations
BOP = Emergency and secondary barrier ( Static sealing in case of Emergency)
3.How they work together in the field
Normal Operation:
→ Stripper is active
→ CT is moving under pressure safely
Emergency Situation:
→ BOP is activated
→ Well is isolated immediately (seal or shear if
required).
