Wax & Paraffin Risk in Tripping Operations

While wax and paraffin deposition are often associated with production wells, they can also create significant challenges during tripping in (RIH) and tripping out (POOH) operations.

As the drillstring is pulled or run in the hole, pressure and temperature changes can cause paraffin wax to precipitate from waxy crude oil. These deposits can accumulate on the drillstring, BHA, casing, or tubing, reducing clearance and increasing friction.

Common operational signs include:

  • Increased pickup and slack-off weight
  • Higher drag and torque
  • Tight spots while tripping
  • Difficulty reaching bottom (RIH)
  • Wax-coated drill pipe and BHA after POOH
  • Longer tripping time and increased Non-Productive Time (NPT)

If wax buildup becomes severe, it can lead to stuck pipe, restricted circulation, or costly cleanout operations.

Prevention and mitigation measures:

  • Identify wax-prone formations during well planning.
  • Maintain effective circulation before and during tripping.
  • Monitor drag and torque trends in real time.
  • Use wax inhibitors or paraffin dispersants when required.
  • Apply hot oil or thermal treatments where operationally feasible.
  • Schedule mechanical scraping or cleanout operations if deposits become excessive.

Even a thin layer of paraffin can significantly increase friction and complicate drilling operations. Early recognition and proactive mitigation are essential to maintain safe, efficient tripping operations and minimize NPT.
