The mud circulating system is a closed loop system used in drilling operations to transport the drilling fluid down the well and back to the surface.
- It starts from the mud pits, where the drilling fluid is mixed and conditioned.
- Mud pumps draw the fluid from the pits and pump it through the drill string down to the drill bit.
- As the mud exits through the bit nozzles, it cools and lubricates the drilling tools while carrying rock cuttings up to the surface.
- The fluid then flows upward through the annulus between the drill pipe and the wellbore wall, returning to the surface through the flow line.
- At the surface, the mud passes through solids control equipment such as the shale shaker, which removes the cuttings. The cleaned mud is then returned to the pits to begin the cycle again.
This system maintains wellbore pressure, cools and lubricates the drill bit, cleans the bottom of the hole, and stabilizes the well walls.
