Dough Method is a technique used for removing chips and debris from gears and internal components of machinery. By using a dough-like or sticky compound, it collects metallic and non-metallic particles left behind after operation or repair. Due to its ability to penetrate grooves and complex spaces, this method can remove even particles that are inaccessible to conventional tools or magnets. The dough adheres to the surface of the part and lifts the particles away without causing damage to sensitive surfaces or gear teeth.
Material and Type of Dough
For the Dough Method, the compound must be soft, flexible, and non-corrosive so that it does not damage component surfaces and can easily absorb fine particles. Silicone-based doughs or elastomeric (rubber-like) polymer compounds with mild tackiness typically provide the best performance. The dough should not be overly adhesive, so it does not stick to the part after use and can be removed easily. Thermal and chemical resistance are also important, especially when used on hot or oil-contaminated components.
The main advantage of the Dough Method over magnets is that it is not dependent on the type of debris and has no magnetic limitations.
