A basket grapple overshot is a specialized tool used in oil and gas wellbore fishing operations to retrieve stuck or lost objects, such as drill pipe, tubing, or other downhole equipment. It is a type of overshot fishing tool, meaning it is designed to latch onto and remove obstructions from the wellbore by “overreaching” the stuck object.
Components of a Basket Grapple Overshot
1.Top Sub – The upper part that connects to the fishing string.
2.Bowl – A tapered section that houses the grapple mechanism.
3.Basket Grapple – A flexible, slotted cylindrical component that grips around the fish (the stuck object).
4.Grapple Control – Helps guide and control the grip of the basket grapple.
5.Mill Guide (optional) – Assists in guiding the tool over the fish and can help clean debris.
Working Principle
1.The overshot is lowered into the wellbore and positioned over the stuck object.
2.The basket grapple expands around the fish as the overshot moves downward.
3.Once fully engaged, the bowl’s tapered shape forces the grapple to contract, creating a firm grip around the fish.
4.The overshot and fish are pulled upward to remove the obstruction from the well.
Applications
Recovering broken or stuck tubing, drill pipe, or casing.
Retrieving tools or debris that have fallen into the well.
Used in both drilling and workover operations.
Advantages
Strong and reliable grip.
Can retrieve a wide range of fish sizes.
Can be modified with different grapples (spiral or basket) for various fishing conditions.
