Disassembling Caterpillar Diesel Engine Air Starters

One of my most valuable and educational experiences was disassembling Caterpillar diesel engine air starters. These air motors are Ingersoll Rand SS815R models. Taking a close look at this equipment and its manufacturing details is truly enjoyable and instructive.

At the beginning of the job, based on experience, we paid close attention to the direction of rotation. Since Caterpillar engines follow the SAE standard and rotate counterclockwise (CCW), the air starter must rotate clockwise (CW). The letter “R” in the model designation indicates Right Rotation. Depending on application requirements, the manufacturer also produces the “L” model with left rotation.

During disassembly, it is essential to mark and tag the housing components carefully in order to preserve the gear timing, ensuring correct reassembly.
