Knowledge that is indispensable for every drilling professional
First: The most important tasks of the Floor Man:
Pulling and lowering the drill thread.
Cleaning the teeth of the pipes and keeping them ready.
Operation and maintenance of drill pipe and weighing catchers and switches.
Handle pneumatic switches for drill pipes, liners, and production pipes.
Operating ribbed pipe valves, measuring the outer and inner diameters of various types of pipes.
Know the different types of splicing and associated handling equipment.
Familiarity with the specifications of the turntable, lifting wheel, drill rope, and methods of crawling and braiding.
Identify wellhead parts, liner accessories, types, and methods of use.
Second: About the Drilling Tower O.W.8/2000:
Horsepower: 2000 HP (two engines 1000 HP each).
Operating System: SCR โ AC to Continuous Current Conversion System.
It contains two A1700PT type slurry pumps (each pump is 1700 HP).
Four electric motors, each motor gives a capacity of 1.5 MW.
Equipped with a complete mud system and supporting equipment—
๐ง Drilling Rig Components | Drilling Tower Components
The drilling tower is an integrated engineering system that includes lifting, swivel, power, and drilling fluids, all of which work in harmony to ensure that drilling operations are carried out efficiently and safely.
The components of the tower are explained as shown in the diagram:
- Crown Block โ A set of fixed rollers on top of the tower, representing the top of the lifting system.
- Runaround โ an overpass used for movement and maintenance around the Crown area.
- Jackknife Derrick โ The folding turret structure used in some types of excavators.
- Gin Pole โ Auxiliary arm used in lifting and mounting operations.
- Monkey Board โ Raised work platform for organizing pipes by the Derrickman.
- Traveling Block โ Moving rollers that work with the Crown Block to raise and lower loads.
- Hook โ the hook that holds the drill shaft and associated equipment.
- Swivel Bail โ A link that connects the hook to the Swivel.
- Gooseneck โ A curved tube that connects the rotating hose to the Swivel.
- Swivel โ Allows the drill shaft to rotate while pumping mud at the same time.
- Rotary Hose โ Flexible hose for transporting drilling mud from the Standpipe to the Swivel.
- Standpipe โ A vertical pipe that transports drilling mud at high pressure.
- Kelly โ Square/hexagonal shaft that transmits rotational motion to the drill shaft.
- A-Frame โ A supporting structure used to lift and install some equipment.
- Dog House โ Control and control room inside the drilling site.
- Derrick Floor โ The main work floor for the drilling crew.
- Rotary Table โ The rotary table that manages the drill shaft in conventional systems.
- Rotary Drive โ Rotary Table.
- Draw Works โ The main winch responsible for lifting and lowering operations.
- Hydromatic Brake โ Brake system for controlling the speed of loads.
- Compound โ Transmission system between engines and equipment.
- Diesel Engines โ The main power source of the tower.
- Shale Shaker โ Separator of drilling products from drilling fluid.
- Mud Tanks โ Drilling mud storage and treatment tanks.
- Pump Drive โ Muddy pump operating system.
- Substructure โ The supporting base on which the tower and equipment are based.
- Mud Pumps โ Pumps to pump mud inside the well at high pressure.
- Drilling Line โ Steel cable within the lifting system.
- Cat Head โ A tool used for pulling and rope handling.
- Draw Works Drive
