Pressure Build-Up Vaporizer in Liquid Nitrogen Storage Tanks

In liquid nitrogen (LN₂) storage tanks, maintaining a stable internal pressure is essential for safe and reliable operation.
The pressure build-up vaporizer (PBU vaporizer) is a dedicated component designed specifically to increase and regulate the tank pressure, not to supply nitrogen directly to downstream processes.

Liquid nitrogen is stored at extremely low temperature (approximately –196°C) and naturally remains at low pressure. As nitrogen is withdrawn from the tank, the internal pressure tends to drop. Without an active pressure control mechanism, this pressure reduction can lead to unstable flow conditions or operational limitations.

The pressure build-up vaporizer solves this issue through a controlled vaporization process. A small portion of liquid nitrogen is drawn from the bottom of the tank through a pressure build-up line. This liquid then passes through the vaporizer, where it absorbs heat—typically from ambient air—and changes phase from liquid to gas. The generated nitrogen gas is routed back into the vapor space at the top of the tank.

As gaseous nitrogen accumulates in the vapor space, the internal tank pressure rises. A pressure build-up regulator controls this process by allowing vaporization only when the pressure drops below the set operating range. Once the required pressure is reached, the system automatically reduces or stops vaporization.

By continuously maintaining the tank pressure within its design limits, the pressure build-up vaporizer ensures:
