Removing the Ball Catcher of the PBL (Pressure Balanced Latch) Sub

Purpose of the Ball Catcher
-The ball catcher is a component located below the ball seat inside the PBL sub.
-It retains the dropped ball after it has served its purpose (opened or closed the ports).
-Prevents the ball from going further downhole and potentially damaging tools or blocking nozzles.

Reasons to Remove the Ball Catcher

  1. Maintenance or Redress
-After multiple activations, the ball catcher may need inspection for wear or damage.
-During redress, removal allows full internal access for cleaning or replacing components.
  2. Compatibility with Larger Balls or Special Operations
-Some operations might require dropping larger balls or allowing free passage of fluids or tools.
-Removing the ball catcher may be necessary if it restricts this function.
  3. Modifying Tool Functionality
-In some cases, operators choose to remove the ball catcher to convert the PBL sub into a one-time use tool or passive port.

Typical Steps in Removing Ball Catcher (General Procedure):

  1. Ensure tool is on surface and properly secured in a vise or cradle.
  2. Disassemble the sub per redress manual.
  3. Remove retaining rings/screws or any locking mechanism.
  4. Extract the ball catcher using pull tools or hydraulic force if required.
  5. Inspect internal bore for damage or debris.
  6. Reassemble or replace components as necessary.
