When drilling fluid is lost into the formation, how do engineers stop it?

Yesterday we discussed lost circulation — when drilling fluid flows into the formation instead of returning to the surface.

So how is this problem controlled?

One common approach is the use of Lost Circulation Materials (LCM).

LCM are materials added to the drilling fluid to help seal fractures, pores, or voids in the formation where fluid is being lost.

These materials work by forming a bridge across openings in the formation, reducing or stopping fluid loss.

Depending on the size and severity of the loss zone, different types of LCM can be used, including:

  • Fibrous materials – help form a network structure
  • Flaky materials – help cover and seal fractures
  • Granular materials – help plug larger openings

In many cases, a combination of materials is used to effectively seal the formation.

Selecting the right type and concentration of LCM is important, as it depends on:

  • Formation characteristics
  • Size of fractures or pores
  • Severity of mud loss

Proper use of LCM helps restore circulation, maintain well control, and reduce non-productive time.
